Gig driver taxes by state (2026)
What a 1099 driver sets aside differs by more than ten points between states. RoadKept states a figure for the states it has sourced — the ones with no income tax and the flat-rate ones — and withholds the rest rather than guess. Each page below is a worked example computed by the same engine the product runs on your own records.
States RoadKept answers for
A figure is stated for 25 of the 51 jurisdictions — each has its own page with a worked example and its estimated-payment dates.
States RoadKept withholds
26 jurisdictions tax driving income on a graduated schedule RoadKept does not yet state a figure from. A graduated state needs the whole bracket table, its own deduction rules and its own payment calendar before a set-aside figure is honest — California has all three and is above. Until then RoadKept states the federal figure for a driver there and says which state it is not including, rather than guess. One of the 26 is different and its row says so: New York's brackets are sourced and correct, and its figure is refused on purpose, because a New York City driver owes city income tax and MCTMT that this product does not model.

- New York — Brackets sourced, figure withheld on purpose — New York City drivers owe city income tax (3.078%–3.876%) and MCTMT (0.60% of Zone 1 net self-employment earnings above $150,000) on top of these brackets. Neither is modelled, Zone 1 is a county list, and RoadKept stores a state — so stating the state rate alone would understate the driver most likely to be reading it. Unblock when sub-state jurisdictions exist.

Questions drivers ask
Which states have no income tax on gig driving income?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. A 1099 driver in any of them owes federal self-employment tax and federal income tax and nothing to the state.
Why does RoadKept not have a page for my state?
Because it will not guess. A state with graduated brackets needs the whole bracket table, its own deduction rules and its own estimated-payment calendar before a set-aside figure is honest, and RoadKept states a figure only for the states where it has all of that. The states without a page are withheld, not estimated — a made-up state rate is a wrong set-aside.
What about local income taxes?
Some states have city or county income taxes on top of the state figure, and RoadKept does not model those. Where a state has one, its page says so, so you know the state figure is a floor and not the whole bill.
